For a big picture, this chunky guide makes a good read but not at one sitting. Some of the information is a little offbase but overall it has interesting information on all the islands in the Hawaiian chain. We go every spring to Hawaii to hike and roam the beaches. We supplement the Fodor's with the Trailblazer series which goes into detail with directions to specific places to explore. I give a High Five to the Maui Trailblazer, my most recent purchase, for all its hike suggestions. We like to plan our own activities and the climate in Hawaii lends itself to daily expeditions outdoors. My wife uses Fodor's to make hotel reservations, something they're expert at.

Hawai'i 2010 is Fodor's latest full color guide to the Garden State. The book is organized by island with subdivisions for different areas of each island. The Guide includes maps (and walking maps if appropriate), short history sections, information about local geography and even some sections on the local flora (it is after all the Garden State). Each section was filled with plenty of information about restaurants, places to stay, and other activities. I appreciated the sections on beaches as well as info on where to SCUBA dive, snorkel, and surf.
A couple things to know before you buy. This is not a pocket guide. It is a little heavy so you may want to leave it back at the hotel as you go out for the day and evening. It is not an exhaustive resource. There are so many things to do and see in Hawai'i that it would be impossible to include them all. If you have something very special you want to see, I would recommend doing additional research prior to your visit.
I have not been to Hawai'i in 20 years but with this guide, I feel like I could jump right in and find the best places to eat, sights to see, tours, and activities. I found the guide to be very informative and an excellent resource. I recommend it to anyone making a first trip or branching out to the other islands.

If Hawaii is on your "bucket list", Fodor's Hawaii 2010 is the absolute must-have!
Fodor's Hawaii 2010 (Full-Color Gold Guides) is a very thick (take anywhere) book chocked-full of beautiful photos, detailed maps and is extraordinarily informative. Nicely laid out chapters From the Welcome to each individual island, island Planners, Beaches, Water Sports, Golf, Hiking (one of my favorites), Outdoor Activities, and on to my favorites of Shopping, Entertainment and Nightlife -- then on to Where to Eat and Where to Stay,
Fodor's Hawaii 2010 also makes an absolutely Fantastic Gift for that hard-to-buy-for-person. Highly Recommended! --Katharena Eiermann

A generally good over view of all of the islands. It is not an in-depth guide however. It skips a lot of the hotels, restaurants, and things to see and do. In particular, it is critical of hotels that don't have an "authenitic" hawaiian feel. I can't give it a high recommendation. An in depth island guide might be a better choice.
